Sophia Wynter #13: A Flicker of Red

Public
I laid upon my bed in slumber until thoughts passed through my mind. Within moments I awoke and felt a tear falling from my eye. It had been some months since Kressiah decided to leave Gyr Abania to seek out a new life in Othard. When she left, she seemed rather at peace. However, the fight between us did not bold well for her body.

Whatever they did to her, the possession itself seemed to attack her aether. I warned her she needed to take it easy. Hoping to myself that she would instead of leaving, let me take care of her until she was cured of her ailment. Sighing a little bit, I moved around in my bed. To make matters worse, the King of Ala Mhigo had become ill.

Prince Theodric refused to allow myself and other healers outside his "trusted" to see the king. As such, he now held responsibility for the land, be it till his father was cured, or beyond. Refusing to let me be at his side the majority of the time. Reduced to essential guard duty outside within the Loch. A duty I might add, that kept me far busier then I thought possible.

When out on patrol, I often find many in need of assistance. Most of the time my patrol starts in the evening, due to my eyesight. My reputation as the Lady of Light kept building as I spent more time with the locals. Lately I had been patrolling even as far as the Fringes. Sleeping in inns was not exactly fun but the happiness in everyone's voice when I could help was enough to keep me going.

I yawned a bit and decided to get out of the bed. After a quick shower, I dressed in my armor and headed out of my inn room. Walking down into the tavern, I could hear the night was indeed young as a couple of men were shouting at each other over a barmaid. She placed there drinks down and attempted to walk away, only for the rather built man to grasp her arm and stop her.

"How much you cost for a night lass? I need to slick my luster and you're quite the looker."

"Please release my arm sir."

She stated towards him as I slowly began to walk down the stairway. He stood up and held her by both her arms now, pressing himself against her bottom. Immediately the inn keeper noticed what was happening and attempted to calm the man down.

"This is not that kind of establishment sir. Finish your drink, I want you out of here."

Releasing her arm, the man stood up, towering over the inn keeper.

"This here is a whore house if I says it is lad. Now bring out your finest ladies, or.."

He reached to his side and grasped his weapon. As he did, the four men at his table followed his lead, arming themselves and standing by him.

"Perhaps I'll shave a few inches off your neck."

Slightly backing away, the inn keeper glanced around to notice the hired help for such issues were in fact missing. Reaching the bottom of the stairs, I began to walk towards them. Quickly I improvised and grasped the folded up cane on my right side. Swiftly I motioned it outwards and tapped its tip upon the ground, as if completely blind. Noticing me, they all seemed to quiet down until I walked in the way of the offenders and the inn keeper.

Stopping, I quickly smacked the large mans leg and caught him off guard.

"AHH!!! What the seventh hell!?"

Quickly I released a holy burst and blasted each of them to the ground. The inn keeper backed away, getting himself to safety.

*clap clap clap*

I heard someone clapping in the corner. Glancing over, I noticed a slight flicker of red aether as the person stood up and walked towards me.

"Not bad, but a true warrior knows not to let the enemy live."

I raised an eyebrow at the mans voice. He walked past me, pushing me aside as he looked down to the men whom were now trying to deal with the blindness filling there eyes.

"They are incapacitated. That is enough for now."

"No, I think not."

He stated in a rather eerily calm voice. I heard him grasp a blade from his back and quickly sheath it back upon him within a mere second.

"These boys let power go to there heads... So, it seems fitting they may as well lose them."

"Wha-"

Before I could ask, the aether of the five men faded and I heard there bodies fall to the ground. Sickly sounds of there heads clashing against the ground as the man stood up.

"Hmmm... Still got it I see.... Nice to know."

"Why the hell would you do that!? They were just drunken blunders!"

He laughed as and began to walk out of the tavern.

"Being blind, you probably could not tell they were pirates."

I shook my head at him rather annoyed.

"I knew, they smelled of the sea and barnacle filth, aside from the rum."

"What you might not know is they were enslaving women. Your welcome."

"And what you just did qualifies as murder. You don't think I'll just let you walk off do you?"

He turned around and chuckled a bit to himself.

"Oh I think you will. You're not going to have much of a choice."

I jumped after him, and quickly he grasped my arms and pulled me around. Hold my arms, he pressed me against his armored body and leaned in, sniffing at my neck.

"So its true. You are exactly what the Ascian stated you are. Intriguing."

I released a burst of light aether and tossed him out of the tavern doors. Quickly I followed and glanced around to see nothing. All trace of the man disappeared is if he was never here. The smell of blood and death within the tavern however, revealed differently.

"Great... Now I have something to hunt."

I stated as I glanced back at the inn keeper.

"Sorry, I need to go."

"Tis fine my lady. Stay safe out there, I will clean this up."

I nodded to him and rushed out of the tavern searching for the strange man further.

******

"She smells rather nice for a woman of action."

The man with long red hair grinned to himself as he looked upon her running off into the distance below.

"Just as I promised, an woman of your kind. Born and raised here of all places. How long has it been since an Esper was last born I wonder?"

The man looked upon his crimson armor for a moment, glaring back to the white robed Ascian.

"Why should I hunt this one?"

The white robed Ascian crossed his arms behind him as he walked forward upon the cliff.

"Think of her as an abomination. No Esper is to wield the light as she does. Hydaelyn choose her to be her champion. With her at the mother crystals side, she remains a weapon. One which could not only destroy our plans, but Yours as well."

The red haired man looked down upon the proclaimed "Lady of Light" and saw truth in the Ascians words.

"She should at least be fun to fight."
