The listed method for going naked works but will take FOREVER

You could technically just show up at 10 (the fish is 100% uncatchable before 10), and use patience(I or II) to catch:
Merithor Goby(!) > Mooch > Wahoo(!!) > Mooch > Titanic Sawfish (!!!)

BUT I went over at around 6:00 ET and Farmed out a few Wahoo which I saved as Swimbait with Spareful Hand. This also got my Anglers Art stacks up. When 10:00 hit I put the first Wahoo on the line (no patience needed here) and used Triple Hook to pull up a whopping SEVEN of these things at once. I used Thaliaks Favor to get my gp back up but Second Wahoo I got a bit less lucky and caught a Silver Shark. But for my third cast I did the same thing as before and caught SEVEN more!

If your gear/level aren't high enough and you want to complete the quest quickly, you can just snag one off the Market Board

I managed to get it after about an hour of plugging away at it. I had all the 620 gear on (I know it was mentioned to do it naked), and caught it at 5:30pm ET with clear skies. Lugworm bait, Patience 2, Fish Eyes. I ended up getting the Pirate’s bane before this, and more sharks than I can count. Seems to be fairly rng, but if you don’t want to grind it out, then there’s always the market board.

I took off my 620 gear except for my Claro Walnut Fishing Rod and 620 accesories for the GP.

took me 3 fishing chain sequences with preferred baits ect to get it.

Now the real pain begins...

Took about 4 real time hours, lost count on how many in-game days... Did all the things that was suggested- Used Lugworm, used Rat Tail, fished with no clothes, fished with clothes. Honestly seems to be purely RNG based since I kept getting Silver Sharks and it took forever...

Got it having Makeshift Bait on. Then did Patience -> Cast -> Precision Hookset (on !) -> Mooch -> Powerful Hookset (on !!) -> Mooch -> Powerful Hookset (on !!!)

Got more (!!!) fish that I lost bait to, or said I wasn't "high enough in gathering", before finally getting (!!!) Titanic Sawfish that I actually fished out with no problem.

Honestly may RNG be on your side... because I was about to bail and buy it on the Marketboard if I didn't get it that last time...

Fished at 9:03 am ET, X: 10, Y: 5.5 in Camp Westwind (Western Thanalan), clear skies.

Followed Kiyoko's suggestion a bit (changed into glamour level 1 gear) with the exception of using the Afflatus Fishing Rod (level 90 rod).

Lugworm bait.

Managed to pull up the sawfish after two attempts.

This fish can be bought on the market board. If you dont want to do the quest you can dump gil into it.

I listened to Kiyoko Ueraven's advice a bit. I was at 1287 gathering. All Indagator gear, but unequipped the body, hands, and legs. I fished during the time and weather. I clicked prize catch and did not use patience and got him after a few tries...I caught Pirate's Bane right b4, but only once.

Odd tip: try to fish that NAKED, yes, naked! You need low gathering stat to get this fish (i hooked mine with 398 gathering (weathered rod + Natural Afflatus pants with +25

Lugworms and you will mooch merlthor goby>>wahoo, patience II, but sometimes you'll hook thoses silver sharks, and the low gathering stat because if you have high gathering, you will get the "pirate's bane" fish...

40 sharks later, 3 in game days spent using the lures people are saying, at the times people are saying, in the spot people are saying and still no dice... and im lvl 80 with all 80 gear barring the sidearm.. what a pathetic quest this fish is tied to and a even more so craft itself.. fishing really sucks

Level 50 and im unable to catch this with 330 gathering rating

It took me 2 real life hours of fishing to get one, while hating my life and will to try to do fishing even tho I don't like it at all...

I was doing that having double the amount of stats that fish require and level 70. I got 32 Silver Sharks instead and 4 Pirate's Banes.

This fish makes me don't want to fish again.

This seems like a perfect time to get one.

Just circle Patience and Makeshift bait till you catch one. I went thru almost 100 lugworm, caught a handful or Pirate's Bane.

Caught at 11:34AM (Trying between 9AM-3PM) from Western Thanalan ( 8.7 , 6.5 ).

Patience II > Merlthor Goby (Precision Hook) > Wahoo (Powerful Hookset) > Titanic Sawfish (Powerful Hookset).

I hooked 6 Pirate's Bane before catching and did not receive the "Something large has risen from the depths to feed!" message.

Overall it may not be worth the 3+ hours trying to catch it when you can purchase it off the market board. Not sure if you're required to actually catch it for the quest or not.

Used the makeshift bait ability + mooch and that's it.

I don't understand why they have made this fish so difficult to catch. I have tried multiple times now and cannot catch it. I get silver sharks and multiple Pirate's Banes, you know, the rarer version of the sawfish, but never the titanic sawfish. Either the time period to catch it runs out, the weather changes and comboing Fish Eyes and Patience or another ability leaves me not enough time to catch it before FE runs out or I just get more sharks and Pirate's Banes. I'm a high enough level it's not my gathering either. This fish sucks.

Got it right after "Fisher's Intuition" buff is turned on. So you need to thin the fish populations (I suppose it's Wahoos)

Bait: Lugworm.
Gathering stats: Gathering 367, Perception 244.
Food bonus: Perception +6%, GP +8%.
Abilities: Mooch 1 (x2 in a row), Makeshift Bait (think it's not necessary).

How to caught it:
Warning: Patience 1 cancels current mooching opportunity.
The main thing is proceed a Mooch Chain: Merlthor Goby → Wahoo. I didn't even use Patience 1, but I activated Makeshift Bait just in case. You need to be patient for large fishes.

Don't give up, i got it on my 4th Mooch-chain try. Good luck!
