Should I just go full "story mode player"?

Public

Not looking for encouragement or cheering up. Just trying to make a decision. I find it difficult to do content beyond dungeons, and even struggle with some of those. I've played on and off since 2016, and this is still true.

The facts supporting a "No" to my question:

* Since I tend to be a tourist, I typically don't get to repeat content as much or consistently within short amount of time. In a way it's like spending 5 or 10 seconds at time learning to ride a bike, with each lesson days or weeks apart. Eventually it may seem like a lot of time spent (4-5 hours), but because of the spacing, learning and especially retention are difficult. Therefore, it can be argued there is reason to believe I have may additional room for meaningful improvement.

* I like the game in general: the community, the music, the combat animation, level and zone design, and its general "personality"

* When I can become what I consider to be at least adequate and competent in combat content, I do often find those parts fun.

The facts supporting a "Yes" to my question:

* I seem to learn and retain knowledge of many fights in FFXIV slowly and imperfectly, and a lot of the game revolves around anticipating what will happen next. While I can do many fights just by common combat cues given in the game and get the rest by guides and practice, harder content (ex-trials, some 24-player raids like Copied Factory, and the little I've seen first-hand of 8-player raids) go significantly beyond my demonstrated speed/capacity. I sometimes feel like I've conquered something huge by not messing up too badly in a dungeon that most players I get grouped with in the DF seem to sleep-walk though.

* I tend to feel like I'm letting people down when I perform poorly in a group, which can sometimes make DF runs anxious to miserable. Yeah, yeah: "Don't worry about it", "It's just a game", "People won't even remember you five minutes after the run ends", etc. I know. But I'm still prone to feeling bad if I'm not sure (or worse, I am sure) that I'm not fundamentally competent at the game or that particular instance.

* See the two points immediately above and add in that over 99% of my runs in group content up to now have been in pure random pug groups.

The question is not "Should I quit FFXIV?" but rather "Should I just plan on coming back on story patches, use my one time Trust run to get caught up, then bail until the next story patch or stick around for any non-combat parts that catch my eye?" Or shorter, "Should I give up on combat progression?"

No one can really answer such questions for me, but I'm curious if anyone else has ever been in a similar situation or has a different take on it. I'm not looking for pity from myself or anyone else, I'm just trying to decide if this is a "Don't let obstacles get in your way!" type of situation or a "Stop banging your head against a brick wall" type of situation.

Thoughtful replies appreciated.

Well Im also getting the same vibes like when i gave up doing the hades extreme or the e3s and e4s . I just login for the dailies because I cant make myself quit it because I have a lot of things to do like eureka and stuff. also my fc members is a big part of me playing the game. I say to myself even if i cant do savage runs, Ill just do other stuff instead like crafting and gathering. have you tried talking to your fc members?

New to FC so just getting to know people a bit. I have noted with humor that I'm not so good at combat content but they seem to not worry what types of content people want to do (i.e. raid if you want to or don't if you don't).
