Annabel's REAL life stuff: rural and urban

Public

So, this is week 3 of the craziness here in the US and one has gotta wonder how people are coping in the various places where they live.

I do not think it is a fallacy to say probably about 80% of the people that view the Lodestone live in a urban or suburban area compared to one more rural like I do.

Now many people prefer a more urban/suburban lifestyle because of A. the ease to get to work, and B. the amenities available living in a large area. There is lots and lots to see and do in a large city area, conveniently located, sometimes with in walking distance, sometimes just a short drive away.

In a rural area you don't really have A. unless your job is actually out in the area. You have to commute long distances to the city where your job might be. And you definitely don't have much of B. Restaurants will be few as are places to shop and entertainment. Hell, our one theater does not even have Stadium seating! :O

The advantage a rural setting DOES give though is the outdoors. Since it is not much developed here there are many places to go to enjoy it that are close and easy to get to. There are parks with huge open spaces, woodsy trails, and open country meadows only a few miles away. The river is a short 10 min walk from my house if I wanted to fish or walk along it. There are larger hills for walking and biking only 20 min away. Compare that to the urban/surburan area where the few places to go to enjoy nature close by tend to be few and VERY crowded at peak times. Plus it takes a LONG time to get out to the country usually, like an hour or so.

Yes, totally different lifestyles, and many wold say they prefer the one closer to....stuff. But what happens when that 'stuff' gets taken away from you? Then your lifestyle....sucks as many are finding out now.

Now I used to live up in Northern Virginia with its sea of suburbia and closeness to DC and everything it has to offer. I have visited people who lived in the city itself and experienced the city life with stores below apartment buildings and relying on public transit to get around. I have seen the row upon row of houses in the suburban areas with their mini malls for food and entertainment. It was all nice convenient and crowded.

But now that has all changed. Places are closed and no longer available for those in the large areas. No more places to eat, places to shop, places to work out or have fun. It's mostly gone for them. They now have to work from home, many in cramped urban apartments or condos, not able to escape them to go enjoy city life. The surburbanites are stuck in their houses/apartments, the mini malls shut down, the few parks a scary place to go to in fear of being around too many people trying to do the same thing, get out of the house. In both places there is no where to go to exercise without running into lots of people unless you do it at really weird hours. In short, the wonderful, close living to everything has become more of an annoyance to them.

Now, rural life, the life with pickup trucks in almost every driveway you see, deer pooping in your yard, (it's REALLY annoying!), and Walmart as your most convenient place to shop. But it DOES have the wide open spaces, not nearly as many people around, and easy ways to escape the place you live and get out to enjoy nature.

We lost the few things we had to go to, but we still have our big parks, our forest trails, large hills, pretty meadows, river to fish, and so on. It is easy to go out to these places and avoid most people since A. there are many different ones to go to, and B. there are not that many people here compared to a place like Northern Virginia.

In short, what was seen a hindrance seen to many is now a blessing in the wake of this epidemic. Because of where I live, my lifestyle still has not changed too much compared to those that live in the big area and kind of stuck with not much to do.

Of course some things HAVE changed. My gaming group decided to postpone meeting since 2 of the members work in the medical community and did not want to risk us. My son is no longer in pre-school for the rest of the season so have to take care of him during the day. Food for the most part has been available again, though paper towels are VERY hard to find and that has me worried since you go through those MUCH more then toilet paper,(which I actually have a lot of)

But, still work from home as normal, still have my gaming house for entertainment. I have my big yard to work in to keep me busy and not bored. Still go out to exercise every day at the parks. It's a quiet life and I am not too worried about the virus here. If I was still up north among ALL those people in NOVA, I would be a lot more worried.

Anyway, I hope those in the more larger areas find ways to endure the isolation without going stir crazy. One might think this is all great and all, being home all the time and being indoors to play lots and lots of games. But as with anything, too much of experiencing it and it will become stale and dull, not much fun to do. Remember, there IS a such thing as 'too much of a good thing.' ;-)

Depends on the area. I come from a big city, but its well known that you need a car..public transport really only covers downtown, where rent is 3x higher(its even higher going further out lol, gotta live in the middle where everything both ways is far).

There's no lock down there yet but I can tell you, its gonna screw that place up, its also poor city.

Being in Vantaa now after leaving Helsinki, everything is far. Nearest store is 17min to and from by foot. Need trains to get to Helsinki and that takes and hr. Everything is close in Helsinki though. (Am from east coast georgia, was there 34yrs).

I dont know what I prefer. I tend to get lucky and it just so happens that im near a store/mall.

No one thought to go ham on buying paper towels,...cleanex(I forgot what they are called in the US, and I used to stock those suckers for years..kleenex is one brand I remember) though, yep. Cold weather makes my nose runny so Im sure Im scaring the crap out of people(OH MY GOD U SPREADING THE VIRUS).

I bought 16 rolls of tp lol might go up to 24, and 10 packs of cleanex.

If Finland goes on lockdown, its just a matter of making sure I got enough food. I got plenty games to play.

rural (country) is my place of peace. Not much for crowded areas. Commute would depend on traffic heading into the city usually an hour. I take the highway riding a motorcycle so that cut's it down to an half hour or twenty minutes so. The whole state of Florida is currently going on lockdown. Me my wife and son are taking it pretty good. Each of us have a ps4 plus my wife has 2 televisions in the bedroom so 🤣. She plays while catching up on garbage television.

There are many ways to stimulate interest with the technology at home. Great time to practice creativity and imagination 👍

Did I read that right Serena, 17 MINUTES to the nearest store? Damn, you are more rural then me! ;p

Yeah, paper towels seem to be the hardest thing to find now along with toilet paper. Everything else is slowly getting restocked and is getting easier to find. Maybe tissues too are hard, but I never use very many,
so don't pay attention to those.

One thing that is new though is that there are now police in the morning at the stores to help manage the long lines waiting to get in at 7 am.

TWO televisions? damn, hardcore! I just use split screen on my computer to do that, it's easy to do plugged into a large screen. ;-)

Yeah, technology can stimulate but it also gets boring after a while. Hopefully you have non technology stuff to to do too like art, gardening, building, etc. You know, something creative using your hands.

Plus exercise, don't forget to get outside! Despite what geeky shut-ins say, sunlight IS good for you! LOL

Well, the weather is fantastic outside. If I was living in rural area, I will definitely go on a hike. Sadly, I live a big city. I just re-sub today to have another reason not to leave home. I know the chance of me getting killed by the Covid-19 is low, but the hospitals are very full right now.
