Modern Girl: Call me, Maybe? Chapter 5 part 6

Public

Part 6:

Annabel looked at her watch, 12:30 pm. She figured what, a few minutes to the bathroom, ten minutes to clean Alea up; then maybe another ten or fifteen to maybe blather on about stuff on the way back, but that's if Adora trusted Annabel to remain alone.

Shit....yeah, she better hurry, fast!

"Ok, what have we got? Me, you, whatever crap is in this room, and that stupid book." Annabel grabbed the small package from the pile on the table. There were six in total, when in the hell did Adora have time to bid on these last night, were they all hers? More importantly, would she miss this one at all if Annabel just took it?

"What are you so worried about," Selene asked, "just take the damn thing."

Annabel shook her head, "it's Adora, I'm sure she'll notice it missing and guess who she'll blame, me! No, I need to leave the package here and just take the book."

"Annabel dearie," the fairy pointed out, "won't your sister equally notice that there is nothing IN the package when she opens it?"

"Yes, I'm not stupid," she remarked as Annabel started going though the cabinets.

Selene buzzed near the pretty blonde; "you could have fooled me, I'm too used to you by now." Annabel ignored the jape and soon found what she was looking for. She pulled out a box cutter and shipping tape from one of the cabinets. Annabel smiled with satisfaction; "Efficient Adora comes through again." It was one of the woman's more annoying traits, but also one that could be very much relied on to always be in effect.

Setting down the tape, Annabel took the cutter and with a few quick slashes had the end of the package open. Setting the cutter down, she slid out the book. The book itself was bubble wrapped to protect it during shipping but Annabel could still see it through the translucent coating. Yeah, this was it in all it's trashy glory. She checked her watch, four minutes had passed.

"Ok so you have it, but what are you going to put in there you silly ditz," Selene pointed out. "You don't have anything to replace it with."

"Quiet, I'm thinking, it's hard enough to do without you chattering away." Annabel bit her lip and fretted. The stupid fairy was right, she DIDN'T have anything, but Adora sure did. There was a mess of crap in here, surely SOMETHING would work, wouldn't it? She kind of wished she had brought more than just that stupid book she was stuck with.

Book? Oh Shit, Annabel thought for a moment, could it......work?

"Selene!" Annabel blurted out, startling the fairy. "That book! No," she clarified as she saw Selene looking at the wrapped schoolbook, "not that one, the OTHER one, the one I bonded. Can I set it to NOT come to me at all, for at least a while?"

"Not come to you? Sweetie, it's KIND of the nature of the bonding, you're stuck with it."

"Yeah, yeah," Annabel made a face, "so you keep reminding me. But surely those, what did you call them?"

"Scholars"

"Yeah, them. I cannot believe they they wanted the thing with them ALL the time. Weren't there spells to keep it in one place for an extended length of time for a while, like hours or days?"

Selene scrunched her face, thinking. "Why yes, I seem to recall there IS such a thing, though it wasn't used much. Must scholars prefer to keep the thing around them as much as possible. Wow, actual thinking for once. You almost give me hope blondie, ALMOST. It could just be a fluke born out of desperation."

Annabel sniffed, "Whatever, I'll take it. Anyway, I'm casting that spell." Going over to the backpack, which she had put in a nearby chair, Annabel unzipped it and pulled the grimoire out.

"Wait," the fairy looked shocked as she flew around. "You're actually going to USE that spell? WHY?"

"Don't have time to go into details Bug, just help me do it, Ok? Oh, and listen for Adora; tell me the MINUTE you hear her!" As she put her hand on the book, Annabel spoke her question.

"Book," she said hesitantly, "yes, me again. Can you turn to um, Oh, what would it be called? Damn it! Oh hell, I want you to STAY put for a certain length of time and NOT come to me, where is the spell for that?"

"Wow," Selene just gaped. "Of all the people I have been around involving that book, I have NEVER heard such a....well, messed up way of asking it something."

"Well I don't know what the hell I'm doing," Annabel began, then stopped. As she hoped, there was a bright flash and the book started flipping, it's pages fanning the air for a few seconds before stopping. Annabel looked down to see what it said.

The title read; 'To forestall the Grimoire's recall for a specified length of time.' The words of the spell were underneath it, as well as the instructions of what to do to prepare.

"Let's see," Annabel read quickly, hoping that she could do this easily. "Do this, do that, say words, and hope to HELL the fucking thing works...got it!"

"Annabel," Selene landed near the book, reading the page, "you're not even TRAINED yet, you really shouldn't be casting spells from that thing. And did you see you need to use the inducer again?"

"Yeah, I saw, it needs my blood to do this. And don't worry, this one looks pretty straight forward, thank God." She glanced at her watch again. Shit, six more minutes had passed, please be EXTRA talky today Adora! "Ok, let's do this."

"Fine," Selene said, giving in. "I STILL think it's stupid but I'll try to help you. "Keep a hold of that inducer, it will give you a boost."

A boost? A boost of what? But Annabel didn't have time to ask questions right now. Unclipping her butterfly broach from her blouse, Annabel took the now loose pin and pricked herself on her finger, wincing at the pain, then placed her bleeding finger on the page, staining it with her blood. She didn't mind this; it was HER book now unfortunately, for better or for worse. The inducer Annabel held in her other hand to maintain the connection to it.

Taking a deep breath, Annabel read the words of the spell. The words felt weird and foreign to her tongue despite them having been translated so she could read them. "Concentrate," Selene said, "focus your mind on what you want." The blonde closed her eyes and did what the fairy said. She felt something odd in her mind, then a odd clock of some kind visualized in her head. It was REALLY disconcerting, and it took a lot of effort for the scatterbrained Annabel to focus on the task. Selene was right, she was NOT ready for this; but she had no choice so Annabel tried her best, she hoped it would be good enough.

"Do you see it," the fairy asked. Annabel nodded and then Selene said, "now adjust it. Think of how much time you want the book to stay put." How much time DID she want the book to stay, hours, days? Could she even DO days? Hell, she didn't know! Annabel started breathing hard, the stress starting to get to her from the effort.

"Calm down Blondie, relax, focus, I know it's feeling weird, you don't know how to control your mana, let the inducer help you. Set the clock, then release it."

Mana? What the fuck was that? Ugh, she had SO much to learn about this stupid crap! Annabel tried to do as Selene instructed; she calmed herself down and focused on the clock, gripping the butterfly broach in her other hand so tightly that it left marks upon her palm. Deciding on a time, she watched in amazement as the timepiece adjusted, setting itself to the time Annabel had specified. As it did so, she felt something draining from her, making her feel exhausted. In her hand the inducer began to feel warm, growing in intensity for a few moments then fading until it was back to the way it had been a few moments earlier.

And then, it all ended, just like that. Annabel opened her eyes, it had felt like a weird dream but one where she woke with little sleep. God she was tired; what HAD that spell done to her? Had it worked? She raised her finger from the book and looked at it, the prick had sealed, no longer bleeding. "Did it work?" Annabel asked, "will it stay?"

She hoped to God it would, otherwise this half-baked plan of hers was doomed.
