Akina grew up in little fishing village on an isolated island off southwestern sea.
When she was 8 she took part in the customary fishing tournament, in which all young Miqo'te female use any means necessary but untraditional to catch as many tiger cod as they can over 2 1/2 Moons.
Though akina did not catch enough cod to be among the primary winners, She did recieve recognition for the most unsusual way of catching a fish.

Its quite a humorous tale:
Akina while struggling to catch up in total fishes caught, found herself taking a bit of a catnap in her little fishing boat.
While in the middle of a nightmarish dream, her tail inadvertently settled on a ball of fish bait, and later with fish bait stuck to her tail as she rolled over her tail went off the side of the boat.
As the last hour of the competition broke and the Den Mothers came out to collect their kittens, Akina woke screeching with tears.
It seemed that her tail and the bait stuck to it had managed to catch the attention of a nearby Oceanic TigerFish.
No sooner had the Den Mother pulled up along side Akinas boat, did Akina fish up the native tigerfish.
And so, Akina was honored for most unusual catch of the day.
Tail + Fish Bait = Tigerfish.

Those who gain such honors are usually considered exceptions to the rule on where their strengths lie.
Those who win the competition become the next generation of master fishcats.
Those like Akina, are usually left to find their own way, Most leave the tribe for other lands, and if they find their strengths abroad someday return to impart their wisdom to the tribe.

Akina being one such member, packed her bags, and bade farewell to her family and friends at the age of 16, determined to find her own way, and someday return accomplished and wise enough to bring greater knowledge to her clan.

And so here we are, 1 year later, Akina has arrived in Limsa Lominsa seeking her destiny.
