Before I start, I would just like to brag that I completely aced Grade 3 math Savage. (Look at my 4 stacks of damage up!) They should come up with a raid where the arena is a Cartesian graph, the boss says two polynomial equations with 1 solution, and players have to solve them and stack on the coordinates of the intersection point of the plots. Then I can be an elite Savage raider too, bwahaha!
So the night before reset I continued my alliance raid journey and did Ridorana. It's old content and I do want to tank, so I looked up a guide beforehand. I'm in alliance B, co-tanks are a DRK (from A) and PLD (from C). The first few bosses go by easily except for a wipe to Belias's adds, which is a sign of things to come...
I make a serious error on the 3rd one, Construct 7. Before we start, someone from C says to wait for C's healer, so I wait. A minute or so goes by. I just had an annoying experience on Rabanastre with someone who ignored all my countdowns and early pulled every boss, so I am wary that the same thing will happen and resolve to start a countdown ASAP to avoid a chaotic unannounced pull. I check the minimap (I'm used to relying on the minimap to check that nobody was left behind in dungeons), and see that there are no green dots off-map. Great, everyone's here! I start a 15s countdown.
I pull and immediately someone says "gg C". As it turns out, C's healer actually DC'ed (hence why she didn't show on the minimap) and I basically made the remaining healer solo heal that fight. They were really good and did so successfully... but I probably caused a few white hairs there! Of course I did grovel in Alliance chat afterward, but Hwa and the rest of C, if you're reading this, I'm really sorry! (In retrospect, what I should have done is use Ready Check first.)
I think if you looked up 'Irony' in the illustrated dictionary you would see a pic of my dumb ass trying to prevent early pulling... by early pulling.
But that's not the drama! The drama comes on the last boss, Yiazmat.
So Yiazmat goes normally until his add phase. The add for B spawns opposite the boss. I don't know the spawn location, and with Yiazmat blocking my view it takes me some time to find and pick it up. However, as we're burning it down I see another add running loose, chewing on one of the DPS. Tank instincts kick in and I provoke off my party member without thinking!
You're facepalming about now. The completely predictable happens: the two adds tether to each other and gain defense up. We can't kill them fast enough to pass the dps check and Yiazmat's ultimate wipes us.
Everyone runs back. C's healer disconnected for good sometime during the fight and we have to wait a while to get a replacement. Someone says "wow, did that really happen twice?" And I recall that the same thing happened on the Belias wipe. I had to pick up a ton of loose corridor adds between the first two bosses, too. People point out that there were adds running loose during the Yiazmat fight.
At this point a DPS from A commented, "our tank hasn't picked up a single add all this while".
Tank from A is immediately defensive and tells the DPS to shut up because they're a lowly DPS. She also says she's new and can't be blamed for making mistakes. A huge fight erupts in alliance chat as people tell Tank A to ease up or do her job and A tries to defend herself.
At this point a healer joins, ready check is passed and I pull (not pre-emptively for once!). The argument in chat sporadically goes on until Yiazmat's adds and AGAIN I see an add running loose eating up DPS! The DPS from A says "Tank A is failing mechanics on purpose, kick after we wipe".
I am not going to let us wipe. This time, fortunately, I manage to keep it in my pants and my party has good DPS. We burst down our add, then I safely pick up the loose add and we kill it too. The argument is STILL going on in chat, with people from all 3 parties telling Tank A to "do your job" and Tank A insisting she is. A NIN from my party says "don't mind the haters" to tank A, who immediately thanks him twice. NIN then says "I was sarcastic," lol.
I didn't say anything throughout, by the way! I was too focused on doing my rotation (hey, typing is a DPS loss!) and mechanics and paying attention to my party. Yiazmat dies in the end, but even C tank somehow gets involved in the fight now, saying "I'm new but I'm trying to do my job" and "look, even the other tank got the achievement [for clearing Ridorana the first time]". (Wait, so all 3 tanks were first-timers?!)
C's replacement healer is having a blast laughing at the whole mess, saying "you guys did it anyway". He had a good laugh at our expense but we kinda deserved it...
In the end, even looking at my recording of the fights, I can't tell for sure which tank was responsible for letting their add slip. But I don't like people like tank A, who are very defensive or easily offended. It's true, the DPS didn't exactly call out Tank A in the most gentle way (and it should have been done in party chat, not alliance chat), but starting a huge fight and trying to wipe the raid by failing mechanics in retaliation is far more stupid IMO. How will you tank lasers and dragons if you can't tank some harsh language?! The clear has to come above all else, you don't get to waste the time of 22 uninvolved people over some hurt feelings.
I also detest the whole mentality that Tank A had, of tanks, healers and DPS each being their own side. It's juvenile tribalism and the opposite of the attitude one should bring to group content. There are only 2 sides in the duty, the players and the boss. What do you think?
I think I am COMPLETELY lost with what you wrote Sig! I did NOT understand a WORD of it!
But then again I am NOT a tank! And for GOOD reason! ;p
Lol!! Please never stop these entries!! I enjoy them so much ^^. I have noticed tanks in the 24 man stuff want a free carry. About 80% of the ones I have rolled with that haven’t been forced into actual tanking have this kind of attitude. It’s like “naaaa, I don’t want to MT. Or Ot. I just want the gear.
It’s p-poor. Lazy and selfish.
Tank l life Rock!! Push the numbers and control the boss, what could be more fun??
Ahaha Annabel! It's all tank stuff, don't worry about it.
The short version is Ridorana has these adds that have to be tanked apart from each other. If they are too close, they link to each other and increase their defense by a ton. There are 3, so each tank has to take one and separate it... but it was not happening!
I'm glad my adventures are entertaining you Felsea. Lol.
Are there really tanks like that? How do they even manage to get to 70, I really wonder. Totally agree though, it's selfish and stupid!
As I understand, you actually were the reason things didn't get chaotic. Also.. it would have been nice if you were informed that the healer dc'd, so that isn't on you. This is partly why I never tank trials. Just can't work with other tanks - I need to be the only tank. All the aggro ping pong and some(like tank A) not pulling their weight, I'd rather carry 4 people, not 10(or 23..)
Although this always burns me a little when people do this: "look, even the other tank got the achievement [for clearing Ridorana the first time]"
That is a lame form of deflection that often works :/.
luckily i have a stock pile of old raban and lighthouse coins...i should only have to start running them weekly after a few more weeks!
Being tank can be rough. People should be respectful but that doesnt always happen. have the appropriate way to address bad mechanics with constructive criticism. Hecklers are more likely to be pricks in 24 man raid than in 4man dungI would take that type of harrassment with a grain of salt or vote dismiss for harrassment if it bothered me so, or respond back in a time period when you wont wipe alliance.
Also it can be hard to take adds off of dps if they open up with their strongest combo w/ higher ilvl, If your new not paying attention to stance or dont know the add phase. Etc. Hey at least he/she wasnt a tank that shirks... Look it up dps. Its a tank spank!
Emeralda: I used to be iffy about working with other tanks too, but now I've got more or less used to it, haha. I agree, I really hate the idea of aggro ping-pong. These days I always go in and ask "X, can I MT or would you prefer to", which usually gets a response. But occasionally in normal raids you get co-tank who doesn't see or doesn't reply.
Mahdi the veteran had the foresight to come all prepared with the stockpile of coins! Ahahaha.
Haha, thanks Sol! I do notice that in 24-mans people are (usually) more chaotic and sometimes do things they wouldn't in normal trials or raids. Perhaps it's the anonymity of being in a crowd?
