The Clemency That Could've Saved My Clear Party

I cleared Innocence EX! There are no tank specific mechanics in this Extreme, so it's not some great achievement, merely part of gearing up. What's notable is the lesson I learned.

As some background for those of you who do not play PLD, it has a powerful, fast casting heal spell called Clemency. This heal is only used as a last resort, due to its heavy cost: it breaks your combo, causes massive DPS loss, disrupts the strict PLD rotation, and disables block and movement (unless you cast it under requiescat). But of course, the true test of a skilled PLD is to correctly judge if using it is the right decision. As someone who does not heal, it's very hard for me to make that judgment call.

During the first pull, there was a moment when 1 healer and 1 dps died, and the other was at low health. The surviving healer slowcast 2 raises in a row. I assumed that either the healer would pause to heal me after the 1st raise, or the newly raised healer would do so, and continued attacking without healing myself. However, mechanics killed the newly raised healer before he could top himself up and I died to autoattacks. The party wiped soon after.

My decision was bad, there is no excuse for it. When the WHM started slowcasting the 2nd raise, I should have recognized that I might not be healed in time and started to clemency myself. I committed the classic sin - prioritizing personal DPS over the success of the raid. And I failed the #1 responsibility of a tank - stay alive and protect your party.

It was not even for a good cause: if we are hitting enrage, you can argue that PLD should gamble and try to survive without it, because if you clemency the dps loss will cause you to wipe anyway. But the enrage of Innocence is very lenient, so there is no need to sacrifice the party on the altar of DPS.

4 players immediately left after the wipe, including the WHM, my co-tank and 2 dps. I can't blame them. But 4 more players soon joined, including 1 veteran (and possibly more) who arrived to help.

This pull was very relaxed, in fact nobody put down markers and I hastily typed in chat "I'll get w add" to cotank. Again there was a situation when one healer and a bunch of dps died, and the surviving healer had to slowcast raises. This time, I decided to play it safe, and cast 5 Clemencies to heal both MT and the newly raised healer. We survived, and got a 10:23 kill! I think I made the right decision, or at least a better decision, haha. I was even rewarded with 2 tanking accessories!

I did use Clemency before but here is the message I am sending (to the healers): either you really suck, or this is so unexpected and you are unlikely to react.

I struggle to see any good reason to rely on the tank clemency himself. I expect WAR to use Trill, tanks to pops defensive CD, DPS to use second wind. Those healing CD has no cost. Clemency, on the other hand, is not exact a potent spell and cost your DPS.

Pro strat... don’t cast clemency, die and save the parse. LOL All joking aside for prog and clear clemency is valuable. But it costs PLD so much. Part of why I live Warriors kit. Equilibrium is a free weaveable heal.

Siglinde, how do you plan your defensive CD on this fight? I cleared it as PLD, but I don't think I am doing it right.

I save Sentinel for the tb, and cycle Rampart, Sheltron and Arm's Length when I am tanking the boss. I think maybe I should use HG on the tb and have one Sentinel for something else. I don't think Arm's Length slow the boss, so I am not sure if it has any effect.

I use passage of Arms on the boss ultimate. However, I have a feeling that it does nothing.

Yes Panda! I admire WAR (and I think DRK) as well whose self heal comes at little dps cost. Clemency costs so, so much. I feel bad everytime I cast it, and sometimes I hesitate, cast too late or screw up rotation anyway. But it's only fair for PLD to have some weaknesses.

Sigurd, I use Sentinel + sheltron on every tankbuster. Intervention cotank everytime he/she gets tankbustered too. Rampart on the adds' Holy Sword tankbuster (it lasts just long enough to cover both times they use it).

I am currently wasting rampart a lot by not using it. I should identify phases where healers are under pressure and use it there or use it to greed for more dps.
Passage and veil I use on Light pillar, because with stack there is always the danger that there are not enough people in the stack to survive it (especially with random deaths), and boss always casts raidwide damage mechanics after each stack

HG I hold in reserve. I know this is not recommended, but there is no mechanic in this fight to cheese with invuln. HG held in reserve may save the run, e.g. cotank die, and is not raised in time to swap when tankbuster comes. You can HG to avoid vuln up from the tankbuster and that may save the run. These are my thoughts as a scrubby noob, lol.

For the boss ultimate, according to posters on Reddit, the damage done by ult is calculated at the instant the last add dies (which is like 10s!! before ult is cast). Anything after that does not count. So shields, passage, etc. put up after adds die don't reduce damage from the ultimate.
