[E2S] Challenging The WALL!

The Journey into Savage 9
A casual scrub's raiding misadventures

It's a great feeling when you get your weekly reclears done, and are free to do anything - or nothing - for the rest of the week. After reclearing E1S on Tuesday after reset, I forgot all about FFXIV until Sunday night.

By then, NA raiders already had a fearsome name for E2S. They called it "The Wall".

Not THIS wall, silly!

Not THAT wall either!

It's no surprise they call it a wall. Americans are very passionate about walls, like this guy.

(Ow! Don't hit me! Fine, no more political jokes!)

"The Wall". A great wall that blocks the road into the upper floors of Savage. A single terrifying number: 72k, the dps required to defeat the boss.

I don't want to bore you with numbers, but I want to emphasize how incredibly high this is. Someone compiled a list of how much DPS is needed to beat the training dummy at The Lawns for Eden Savage. A standard raid composition with jobs that are neither the highest nor lowest dps in their role (GNB/WAR, WHM/SCH, SAM/DRG, and BRD/SMN), this party who can all clear their E2S dummy - qualified to do the fight according to SE - only has a total DPS of 72.4k. Against a target dummy! A real party benefits from food, potions and buffs, but humans also make more mistakes in actual combat.

This is a battle that tolerates no error. Players told stories of how they only cleared on perfect runs with no deaths.

I was shocked, but I realized I can't think like this. It's silly to worry about the dps check when I haven't even seen enrage. Let's learn the mechanics, and the dps will naturally come.

Even the mechanics are no joke. I joined "2nd flares prog" parties from Sunday to Monday. On Sunday, the first party I joined was unable to progress past 2nd flares despite an hour of practice. The sequence of delayed mechanics is long and complex, and I kept getting it wrong.

However, after we disbanded, I had a breakthrough. I had been learning the fight by watching videos of other people's clears and trying to memorize every mechanic, but in fact, I only need to react to a few crucial events. During 2nd flares, there are only 2 possibilities. Either I will be the first tank to get the flare marker, or I will not. That means there are only 2 simple patterns of movement I have to memorize. I felt confident again.

Unfortunately, that was the least of my problems. NA has adopted a confusing strategy for 2nd flares. During this phase, a random tank, healer and DPS are targeted with this proximity flare marker which requires other players to move away to reduce damage:

Instead of having all 3 marked players run away from the party to reduce damage, NA has decided that only 2 players should run away, and the party should stack on the 3rd flare (the damage of 1 flare is not lethal even at point-blank range).

However, they cannot decide if it is the healer's flare or the dps's flare the party should stack on, and every party I joined wiped to this misunderstanding. Worse, players instinctively run from the flare marker and do not stack, killing themselves. This boss tries so hard to trick us, now we have started to trick ourselves too, lol!

My luck was bad, and many parties ran into interruptions - people had to leave, or DC'ed, etc. One party disbanded after only 2 pulls, as the healer had to leave. Others struggled to get to 2nd flares intact. After a fruitless 3 hours, the very furthest I have ever seen is the aftermath of flares + shadoweye during 2nd flares. I felt disappointed again...! This rollercoaster life is taking a toll on me, haha.

At times like this I can only remind myself of why I am doing this: as a journey, to see how far I can go and to become a better player. It's alright, it's fine if we do not clear early, we are not some team of world first raiders, or a static who plans to clear by week X. And every day we are in PF learning and fighting, the journey is not over.

Step by step, inch by inch, let's keep walking towards a victory we have forged with our own two hands.

Don't get bitter, just get better! Let's clear together next time!

This fight is really no joke. The mechanics are easy but they trick you. But one thing I really wanted to comment on.You learned the major trick when learning a fight you should learn your possibilities and patterns. Then learn the rest of the fight later. Rarely have I understood what each class had to do when I learned a fight. I only knew what I had to do.

Don't worry Annabel! Just wait till you get to Titania and wipe a dozen times due to low dps on adds and vote abandon, and you, too, can experience this fun! Muhahaha! *runs*

You're right, panda! I got to focus on mastering my own part in the fight first. Without being able to do the very basics, worrying about all other things is pointless.

All of PF is busy with weekly clears right now... I guess I will have to resume practice tomorrow.
