All This Fear & Panic
The government of my country, Malaysia, suddenly announced a lockdown
of the entire country about 45 minutes ago. From the 18th to the 31st of March, all tourists and visitors are barred from entry. All cultural, social and public gatherings are banned. Friday prayers and religious activities are suspended for Muslims. All government and private premises closed except those providing essential services and businesses (banks, supermarkets etc). All public and private schools are shut down.
I wonder if it is too late. The government was embroiled in a political crisis for most of the last 3 weeks that ended in a change of government. While they were distracted, ordinary Malaysians went about life as usual, holding mass gatherings and activities. Nobody paid the virus any respect, until after a religious gathering of over 14,000 people at a mosque, the number of cases in the country nearly doubled overnight
to over 400 cases, many linked to the gathering.
My classes are cancelled. I don't know yet if I will be sent on unpaid leave. Beyond the immediate health concerns, the political crisis and the virus have severely damaged the economy, and the near future will be a difficult time for many people.
Well, there is no use wallowing in doom and gloom. Even if the worst comes to pass, I am young and healthy. I'm sure I will find something to do!
At this point, I am more annoyed by the panic buying hordes than anything else. Can people stop trying to buy the entire supermarket and bring it home? WTF are people hoarding toilet paper of all things for?! It's a respiratory disease, not Ebola, ok?! Lol!
Ha! The panic buying has been going on here (the French bit of Canada) since like... Wednesday. I have a foot injury and tried getting groceries delivered, and all I got was gluten-free biscotti because the stores are being raided xD
My library is closed for the forseeable future and I'm stuck at home. It's day 3 and I'm already bored out of my mind, which is likely just anxiety since I normally cannot get enough alone time! I'm hoping I settle into it.
Lalli, sorry to hear about your foot injury. I hope you get well soon!
Yes, while time off from work might sound good, I expect most people will be bored to death very soon, lol. Especially with all the curfews and lockdowns going on, and all places of entertainment closed. I hope you're at least able to get some rest!
I also wish people would stop with the fearmongering - I don't think it helps anyone to paint apocalyptic pictures about the future. Of course the virus needs to be taken seriously and steps need to be taken, but fueling the panic only makes people lash out hoard more toilet paper!
Oh I didn't see you answered right away! That must mean you're online right now xD that's rare given timezones!
Over here, we had 2 rounds of panic buying. First, the Singaporeans came and raided our stores and bought all the hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes and soaps (how is antibacterial soap gonna help against a virus?! The ethanol in hand sanitizers does destroy some viruses, but not all too). It has been impossible to buy hand sanitizer for a whole month. Now the Malaysians are getting up to it too and buying everything that's left, lol!
What a coincidence, haha!
Baby boom of 2020 incoming
You say that Espy, but I saw a report from China that the divorce rate has spiked cause quarantined couples are spending too much time together, lol! You know what they say, familiarity breeds contempt!
Never suggested the couples would stay together lol. Sex is something to do while the power is out
Yup. It’s all very out of control.
Felsea- I know right?! Before the situation has become devastating, people are already panicking 1st.
The media isn’t helping tbh. All they needed to say was “we don’t want our health care services to bottom out, so we need everyone one to be extra vigilant with this new variant or the flu.”
All ppl are hearing is “deaths” “ spreading” “growing numbers”.
Been a crazy year hay.
Yeah I agree with Felsea, it's like, the media has been fearmongering for months, and now that people are going nuts and hoarding the TP they're like "oh no why can't people handle this rationally"
Maybe cause they're terrified? You gotta be very careful with how you handle information and 24/7 news channel are notorious for sensationalism...
Face it, simply the news REALLY sucks nowadays for ANY kind of information.
Plus the internet does NOT help with everyone posting all kinds of crap on it.
Do what you have to do and be smart about it. You know your lifestyle, your situation, and your health, act accordingly.
And STOP buying ALL the TP! ;p
Sig dear, you probably should find out what is up with your pay and all. This could really mess up your house dreams if you have to dip into your savings to live.
