Retainers and You

Public
FF14 Retainers and You.

I personally love retainers they are super helpful and super useful, retainers can store items and gil for you and sell items on the Market.
In 2.2 we got the ability to use our retainers for Retainer Ventures. We can assign our retainers classes and give them gear. Then we can send them out for expeditions for items and experience, I find them super useful and a big help for making gil.

Unlocking and hiring Retainers

So the important parts unlocking retainers, to unlock retainers you have to complete the main story quest The Scions of the Seventh Dawn, its level 17 but you'll probably be about level 20 by the time you get there maybe a bit higher. So after completing this quest you will have unlocked retainers, so make your way over to any retainer vocater, which are the NPC's that allow you to hire retainers, there's one in each city

Parnell – Can be found at Gridania
Chachabi – Can be found in Ul'dah
Frydwyb – Can be found in Limsa Lominsa

To Unlock Ventures and Retainer Classes, you must complete the quest An Ill-conceived Venture (Side Quest). There is a different version of the quest for each city, but they are basically the same quest just different locations, they effect nothing. So this quest is basically a quest to go and help a retainer who got sent out on a venture, after going and finding the retainer and helping him out, go back to the Retainer vocator in the city you took the quest from and turn the quest in. This will unlock Retainer Ventures.

So just a quick bit of info about retainer ventures. The Retainer can not go on a venture with out having a class assigned to them. The retainer no matter what class can not be a class that you yourself have not unlocked. The retainer can also not level higher in a class than you yourself have, so if you have unlocked Samurai and levelled it to 70 they will not level above level 70. So I recommend giving the retainer a class that you have levelled to level the current level cap. There are Retainer level boosts in the mogstation which do make this easier.

Using Retainers

To interact with your retainer, use the Summoning Bell found in Inn rooms, the markets of the 3 main cities, residential areas and other locations such as Revenants Toll, you can also craft this item and put them in your houses and apartments. Pick the retainer in question from the menu. You'll then be given a menu of option

Entrust or withdraw items from your retainer
Entrust or withdraw gil from your retainer:
Sell items from your inventory on the market:
Sell items from your retainer's inventory on the market:
View sale history
Assign Venture
View Report
View Retainer attributes and gear
Reset retainer class (retainer class level)
Quit: Ends the interaction with your retainer.

You can access your retainers at any time, even in the middle of a venture. However, they will stop selling on the market until the interaction is complete.

Retainer Ventures

So a few things you will need to know before sending your retainers out on ventures. Firstly Gear retainers can be equipped with gear that fits their class and level. The types of gear they are given affect the items they can procure during their ventures. Items will be procured in increased quantities by increasing either average item level for Disciples of War and Magic, or gathering rating for Disciples of the Land. Moreover, for retainers set as Disciples of the Land, increasing perception will result in a higher likelihood of obtaining high-quality items so best to try and give your retainers good gear that will help them get the best results.
Certain types of ventures require a certain item level/ gathering rating at higher levels. Gear equipped by a retainer will be bound upon completion of a retainer venture. However, bound items can still be exchanged and used by both players and their retainers. Gear durability will not be affected by retainer ventures.

Types of Retainer Ventures

Hunting
Hunting allows Disciples of War and Magic classes to collect specific items dropped by enemies. All of the Disciples of War and Magic classes will procure the same items.
Hunting generates Crafting Material and other items commonly dropped by monsters. Players can decide which item your retainer brings back. It can be used as a steady supply of EXP for your retainer or items for crafting. Takes an hour normally, but is faster if the retainer is sent to gather materials of much lower level.

Mining
Mining allows Miner class to collect specific items gathered by miners. Note that a retainer can only retrieve items that you have recorded in your gathering log, i.e. items that you have collected yourself at least once.
Mining generates Crafting Material and other items commonly procured by miners. Players can decide which item your retainer brings back. It can be used as a steady supply of EXP for your retainer or items for crafting. Takes an hour normally, but is faster if the retainer is sent to gather materials of much lower level.

Botany
Botany allows Botanist class to collect specific items gathered by botanists. Note that a retainer can only retrieve items that have recorded in your gathering log, i.e. items that you have collected yourself at least once.

Fishing
Fishing allows Fisher class to collect specific items gather by fishers.
Fishing generates Crafting Material and other items commonly procured by fishers. Players can decide which item your retainer brings back. It can be used as a steady supply of EXP for your retainer or items for crafting. Takes an hour normally, but is faster if the retainer is sent to gather materials of much lower level.

Field Exploration
Field Exploration allows Disciples of War and Magic classes to explore randomly, yielding random items including Allagan Bronze and Silver Pieces. While Field Exploration takes longer than Hunting, it yields far more experience points for your Retainer. Higher-level retainers may procure items, minions, and Crafting Materials unique to exploration ventures.
Field Exploration lasts a long time (18 hours) but yields the most EXP for your retainer. Give this task to your retainer before you go to sleep, work, or any other prolonged period of time away from your gaming devices.

Highland Exploration
Highland Exploration allows Miner class to explore randomly, yielding random items including Allagan Bronze and Silver Pieces. While Highland Exploration takes longer than Mining, it yields far more experience points for your Retainer. Higher-level retainers may procure items, minions, and crafting materials unique to exploration ventures.
Highland Exploration lasts a long time (18 hours) but yields the most EXP for your retainer. Give this task to your retainer before you go to sleep, work, or any other prolonged period of time away from your gaming devices.

Woodland Exploration
Woodland Exploration allows Botanist class to explore randomly, yielding random items including Allagan Bronze and Silver Pieces. While Woodland Exploration takes longer than Botany, it yields far more experience points for your retainer. Waterside Exploration
Waterside Exploration allows Fisher class to explore randomly, yielding random items including Allagan Bronze and Silver Pieces. Quick Exploration
When your Retainer is level 10, they can go on Quick Exploration. The retainer will come back with a single item. The experience your retainer gains depends on the item they collect. Note that players will get random items from fish to furniture to endgame gear. While not making much sense, some items might be very rare or valuable.
Quick Exploration is a short (one hour), expensive (Venture-wise), and random task that your retainer can perform. The item your retainer brings back can be anything, as the activity is independent of your retainer's class, level and equipment (thought the higher level your retainer's gear is, the better chance they have of acquiring rare items). For example, a level 10 retainer can bring back endgame gear. The experience your retainer gains correlates to the rarity of the item they bring back.

Quick Exploration Rewards
Aside from 1.0 items and dungeon and trial gear, players can obtain 8 untradeable dyes: Pure White Dye, Jet Black Dye, Metallic Silver Dye, Metallic Gold Dye, Pastel Pink Dye, Pastel Green Dye, Pastel Blue Dye, Pastel Purple Dye. Additionally players can obtain the Retainer Fantasia.

So this is all the information I have on retainers I hope this was helpful, and has helped you to understand you're retainers a bit more, and to make the most use of them.

Thank you for reading

the dyes your retainer can bring back from quick ventures are in fact tradeable. the ones you buy from the mog station (or trade the gold chocobo feathers for) are the ones that are not tradeable.
