Hello fellow Eorzeans!
Have you ever wondered which of Eorzea's clans are the most popular on your data centre? Have you wondered about the differences in popularity between your data centre and another?
Wonder no further! I present to you bar charts and spreadsheets showing the demographics of Eorzea by clan, as well as by sex, data centre, and server. The vertical bar charts show the fraction of male and female characters of each clan by data centre. Separately, the horizontal bar chart shows the fraction of males and females by data centre. The spreadsheets show these data, as well as the languages used by the owners of these characters, tabulated by server. All data have been collected by Lucky Bancho in their amazing census taken from mid July to early August of 2020. (A link to this census is provided at the end of this blog entry.)Note
: Only active characters
are included in the census. To be judged as active, a character must satisfy the following conditions (translated from Lucky Bancho's blog):
1. The character appears in a Lodestone search at a level of 36 or greater or as a limited job
2. At least one of the following has occurred since 8 April 2020:
a. The character was newly created
b. The character has accrued EXP
c. The number of minions or mounts acquired by the character has changed
Also, the character must NOT satisfy any of the following conditions:
1. The character possesses zero mounts.
2. The character's maximum battle job level is 60 or 70, and the character has equipped a weapon that is provided by a Jump Potion
3. The character is level 50 or greater and is not affiliated with a Grand Company.Summary
The following is a summary of the most significant findings. (Note that JP: Japan, NA: North America, and EU: Europe.)Among female characters
・Miqo'te Seekers of the Sun
(hereafter "Suncats") are the most popular females worldwide, with around one fifth of females being Suncats. Suncats are particularly popular in EU. The server with the highest fraction of Suncats is Shiva (on the EU Light data centre), where over one fourth (!!) of females are Suncats.
・Other clans with global appeal are Hyur Midlanders
, Miqo'te Keepers of the Moon
(hereafter "Mooncats"), and Au Ra Raen
・Among Au Ra, Raen
are equally popular in NA, whereas Raen are around 10% more popular than Xaela in EU and around 30% more popular than Xaela in JP.
・The Lalafell clans, Plainsfolk
, are overwhelmingly more popular in JP than in NA and EU, with either clan being around thrice (!!) as popular in JP than in NA and EU. This is the biggest regional difference among all clans and sexes
. Between the Lalafell clans, Dunsefolk are more popular than Plainsfolk worldwide.
・In contrast, the Viera clans, Rava
, are nearly twice as popular in NA and EU than in JP. Furthermore, Rava are slightly more popular than Veena in NA and EU, whereas the opposite is true in JP.
・While not particularly popular all around, Hyur Highlanders
are relatively much more popular in NA and EU than in JP. Around one in twenty females are Highlanders in NA and EU, whereas only around one in seventy females are Highlanders in JP.
・The popularity of Elezen Wildwoods
is small worldwide, and that of Elezen Duskwights
is smaller still.
・The Roegadyn clans, Sea Wolves
, are the least popular clans worldwide. Fewer than one in sixty females in NA is one of either clan. This fraction drops to around one in one hundred in EU and one in one hundred fifty (!!) in JP. On around half of the JP servers, if female Roegadyn of both clans are added together, they would still be numbered in only the double digits. Among males characters
are the most popular males worldwide, with just under one fifth of males being Midlanders in NA and JP and just over one fifth in EU.
・Other clans with global appeal are Miqo'te Suncats
・Both of the Au Ra clans are around twice as popular in NA and EU than in JP. Between the two clans, Xaela
are around twice as popular as Raen
are also around twice as popular in NA and EU than in JP.
・As with female Lalafell, male Lalafell, particularly Plainsfolk
, are much more popular in JP than in NA and EU. Nearly one in four males in JP are Lalafell. This fraction drops to around one in seven in NA and one in ten in EU.
・While not particularly popular all around, Elezen Wildwood
are around 50% more popular in JP than in NA and EU. Meanwhile, Elezen Duskwight
are equally unpopular worldwide.
・The least popular clans for males are Roegadyn Sea Wolves
and Hrothgar Helions
and The Lost
. However, none of these male groups is as few in number as female Roegadyn.Ratio of males to females
・There are more female characters than male ones worldwide. The disparity is greatest in JP, where the ratio of males to females is around 1:2. The same ratio is around 6:7 in NA and 4:5 in EU. Takeaway
Miqo'te in general, and Suncats in particular, is the most appealing choice for both males and females worldwide. In contrast, both Roegadyn and Hrothgar clans, as well as Elezen Duskwight, are the least appealing choices for both males and females worldwide. From there, popularity differs based on the sex of the character and on the region. Based on sex, the most striking differences are Hyur Midlanders, which are far more popular as males, and Au Ra Raen, which are far more popular as females. Based on region, the most striking differences are seen between JP and NA/EU, with (1) both male and female Lalafell being far more popular in JP than in NA/EU; (2) male Au Ra being more popular in NA/EU than in JP; (3) Viera being more popular in NA/EU than in JP; and (4) male and female Highlander being more popular in NA/EU than in JP.Reference
