Merger Musings

Public
This week, my FC on Famfrit <Fenix> aka Phoenix Down, merged with what is arguably the best progression FC on Famfrit: Atlas. It was a pretty tough decision when I left Exodus for Famfrit - and in my time on Exodus, My FC there absorbed an FC - so I have history here.

Now, Fenix was a bit small, mostly two raid groups and a few folks surrounding them, but Atlas is not all that much bigger, just a bit more active. Our FC Lead mentioned a problem with activity had caused us to lose some members, and this move was done due to a rapport we have with Atlas and to help both FC's members have a larger pool of active players while still remaining a raid focused FC as a whole. "Ok Denz... your tag changed... who cares?" Let me dig into my point - Any merger like this in any MMO comes with some unspoken risk.

What happens if people don't get along? What about everything you worked for? What about that sweet FC house (ours was a large in Ward 1 of Mist)? These are heavy questions and in our case - I had previous failure to speak from.

On Exodus when Severed absorbed Chocobo Sun Bros, we brought in a small, but tight knit group of people of about 15 people. CSB had huge benefits from us, a much larger pool of active players, several dedicated and skilled raid groups whom were much farther ahead and could lend advice. The problem? The primary leader of CSB's attitude changed A LOT when he joined - he became quite toxic. He refused to accept advice, things had to be his way for a raid group, but he relied on Severed to do all the work for him. The result? CSB's raid squad left following their leader. A fair amount of venom was thrown my way as I was the FC lead at the time. I explained my case, but in the end wished them well - honestly I want people to just enjoy this game. The amusing part: the more casually minded members of CSB stayed in Severed - they loved our environment and the new friends they had made.

This experience led me with some simple advice: Keep an alt in the FC to hold the tag and FC house to ensure we had a back up plan. If something somehow went wrong - no matter how unlikely, have a plan. I think this advice is relevant to any people whom move FCs in a group. Also, ensure the FC being absorbed has an advocate with direct line to the FC lead to ensure the merge is smooth and any issues are dealt with at the highest level. This ensures the new folks are show a little love through someone they already know - this doesn't mean that advocate is an officer of any form, but the new FC for awhile should be properly represented in meetings.

Have any of you gone through FC mergers? Have a positive or negative experience if you did? Feel free to comment.

Tomorrow I'll have the follow-up review for State of the Realm in my Show Evaluation series up. Keep adventuring my friends!

Bye, Fenix! Hope it works out for the best :) From what I've experienced there's usually a 60% chance of mergers working out for a majority positive experience, and a 10% chance of a unanimously positive experience. Sounds like you've weathered past bad mergers already, though, and have taken steps to mitigate your risk. Pro strats.

Hope you're ready to fish, cause that's pretty much all they do in ATLAS ;D fishing is real endgame.

@Celadin: Honestly, I just followed my static. It is nice to have a little more chatter, but I'm here for raids and random musings (like leveling WAR)
