If you can burst fast enough you can kill Ifirit before it goes into Invincibility phases and beat it in like 10 seconds. I was able to pretty consistently do it as a 90 PLD so I imagine a DPS job with a really fast opener could do it even easier.
(90 PLD: I had to pop Fight or Flight, chjarge in with Intervene, immediately pop Requiescat then hit with Confiteor, weave in Circle of Scorn and Expiacion then the second Confiteor ability kills him. Sometimes it leave it with 5% and you'll still have to sit through it, but 4 out of 5 times it dies.)
This morning she woke up before me and decided to try it two more times. She got the Nightmare Whistle on her second attempt. :-)
As soon as we finished the fight, we went right back in. At 6:00 PM (probably 200 attempts?) we still didn't have the Nightmare Whistle. We thought, "Maybe you have to beat all three primals on Extreme and then one drops the whistle?" So we unlocked Titan and Ifrit, beat them on Extreme, then went back to Garuda.
Strangely, we played the Garuda Trial over and over for another two hours and not only did we not get a Nightmare Whistle, we didn't get a single Xanthos Whistle. (We got probably 30 of those in the first 6 hours.)
Doing something wrong? Unlucky? Or maybe the mount is more rare than we thought? Not sure.
While SquareEnix, giving, free Nightmare Horse drop on Ifrit EXTREME first KILL, after 15 WIPES! On Trial account!
This guys are laughing their selves to the bank, while Blizzard goes crying back to sleep.
GG.
