Free companies are player-run organizations which allow their members to pool resources, be it items or gil, to accomplish feats that would be difficult or impossible for a single individual.
The benefits of joining a free company include a dedicated chat channel for all members, the ability to purchase an estate to serve as the group's base of operations, and the use of free company actions that grant bonuses such as increased experience points.
No two free companies share the same goals and motivations, so be sure to choose the free company that's right for you.
Linkshells and cross-world linkshells are chat groups which allow for quick and easy communication between players who are not necessarily in a party or free company. Unlike free companies, players are able to join multiple linkshells, making it possible to join different communities dedicated to various aspects of the game.
Linkshells: allow communication with any players on the same World.Teamwork is key, so be sure to find a team with whom you're confident you can hone your skills together.

The best FC I've been a part of. I followed my friend who joined them after a long stint in their raid static, because they seemed chill and helpful in the raid streams. My experience with Flames of Jiburi is the same. While I tend not to raid (though I have filled in on occasion when a regular is unable to show on raid days), they've always been very helpful of other things (like crafting, eg.), warm, and super friendly. Lots of shenanigans and tons of laughs. :) I love these guys.

Ponyo is an amazing FC with even more amazing people! From helping with AAR dungeons to helping beginners raiders, they do it all! Everyone is very supportive in any aspect of the game you enjoy. This is to everyone out there that's been playing FFXIV for a while and has gone from FC to FC and almost quit the game due to drama and toxicity, I have been there, and if it wasn't for this FC I would have been long gone. I love these guys, been some of the happiest times in gaming for me and that says a lot. I would recommend ANYONE, whether it be someone shy, casual, hardcore, weird, nerdy etc etc, come join us, you can thank me by sending me gil (jk jk) maybe not? lol see you all in the FC!
