I caught it first try with a versatile lure, but I am also level 52 fishing

got it first try using sand leeches, patience, and powerful hookset

i got mine at 25.4, 37.0 but i dont think the specific location matters too much just be in the dune SE of forgotten springs, corner of the map

after casting 40 times i caught 4 desert catfish total and lost about 10 fish along the way
2 were caught with powerful hookset, 2 were caught just basic fishing so just be patient and hope the rng gods are with you

im too lazy to test out the versatile lure at this point but if sand leeches arent working for you, i guess it would be worth a try.

Based on my experience.

This is dune fishing.

Location: Sagolii Desert, around X25 / Y36, along cliff ledge.

Bait: Whatever specific for dune fishing (sand leech, rolling stone, ...). All of them can be purchased at the merchant & mender of Forgotten Springs (take the one matching your level).

Versatile lure: It's not worth the hassle (looooooong) since you can buy what works best straight at the camp.

Method: Patience/Powerfull hook.
I tried on standard cast/hook, but never got one this way.

My level 45ish fisher had no luck until I lowered her perception. I dropped perception to 143 from 185. At 185, I used a full stack with no Catfish. At 143, I think it was the 10th cast.

Seems like having too high of stats might also make it difficult to catch this. Went back to do FSH quests after mostly leveling via Ocean Fishing and couldn't catch one after 3 stacks of bait. Removed my gear til I had ~268 Gathering and ~140 Perception and found multiple quickly.

Took about 8 casts at X:27 Y: 37.3 with Sand Leech

Angel Devil Adamantoise [Aether]

Used 10 X sand leech at X25.5 Y37.1 and got nothing (including patience skill and powerful hookshot)

Got one first try at X29.2 Y35.4 with a sand leech and no skills used, luck perhaps? It has no time or weather restrictions and is a double (!!) Catch.

After a few more tries with the sand gecko, this desert catfish is a bit RNG it seems.

Fifth catch with Rolling Stone, had luck with Sand Leech too but it did take a while. X29 Y35 Sagolii Dunes.

Caught 27x 37.3y versitle lure and 91 gathering. Took a good few tries but don't give up if you're thinking of quitting :)

I caught two of these with about 25 bait. Here's how I did it:

Southern Thanalan, Sagolii Desert, Sagolii Dunes (x: 27.4, y: 37.4). There is no visible water here - you cast into the void, Kupo.

Gathering: 194
Perception: 166
Fisher Level: Between 42 and 44
Active Abilities: Snagging, Sneak
Bait: Sand Gecko and Sand Leech
Eorzean Time: 7:40 AM and 2:18 PM (I do not believe time of day matters for this catch)

Normal Cast, ~20-25 seconds, level 2 bite (two exclamation points), normal Hook. I got the first one with a Sand Leech and the second with a Sand Gecko.

I caught it with the Sand Leech and snagging but it took 35 casts to get it.

I think having a higher gathering stat might help because I am pretty sure I was missing the hook on all of the ones that it could have been before because I have fairly low gathering.

Sir Mantisshrimp Malboro [Crystal]

Sagolii Dunes (29, 35). Used about 15 sand leeches, switched to sand gecko for about 15 tries, then switched back to the leeches and got it in 4 casts. ET 11:58pm. Snagging enabled the entire time.
