Thavnairian Onion

If you want to unlock the full potential of your Chocobo Companion, Thavnairian Onions will be your most needed items.

Why is it needed

Once your Chocobo reached rank 10, you'll notice it won't gain more experience nor rank. However, the maximum rank a Chocobo can reach is rank 20.

When the Chocobo is at its max current rank and don't get any more experience, a Thavnairian Onion will unlock the next rank, allowing it to gain experience again until it reached the next rank.

That means for each level you need one Thavnairian Onion, so a total of 10 Onions to reach rank 20.

With each level, your Chocobo will acquire Skill Points to use, having enough at rank 20 to complete all three Skill Trees and get associated Bardings.

How to use it

You can't use a Thavnairian Onion at any time. If the requirements are not met, the Onion will have no effect.

For a Thavnairian Onion to have any effect, these conditions must be met:
- Chocobo must be at rank 10 or upper
- Chocobo experience bar must be empty
- Chocobo must not be able to gain experience anymore

Once you have checked all this, you can give an Onion to your Chocobo.

You can give a Thavnairian Onion to your Chocobo through the Stable, training it with the Onion as a reward.

Another mean would be to call your Chocobo on the field and give it the Thavnairian Onion as you would do with any other Chocobo food.

Where to get it

You can get Thavnairian Onions by 3 means: gardening, marketboard, two quests each giving one Onion.

Landing a Stable Job
Requirements:
- Disciples of War or Magic Lv. 50
- Heavensward Main Scenario Quest named "A Better Half".
Questgiver: Mathye at Ishgard, area The Pillars (X: 6.2 Y: 9.4).

A Hunter's True Nature
Requirements:
- Disciples of War or Magic Lv. 57
- Main Scenario Quest named "Tataru's Surprise"
- Sidequests

Questgiver: Hervoix at The Dravanian Forelands (X: 31.6 Y: 22.9)

Gardening - seeds

Thavnairian Onion seeds, if not bought on the marketboard, needs to be harvested by crossbreeding. Meaning you need to have a house with gardening plot.

You can find several crossbreeding that can give Thavnairian Onion seeds bellow. Some more unlisted ones might exist. Those listed are not guaranteed to give Thavnairian Onion seeds and can give other seeds or nothing.


The most easiest way would be to follow a crossbreeding diagram like those on ffxivgardening.com.

Gardening - Thavanairian Onion

Once you have the seed, you can grow a Thavnairian Onion either in a garden or in a flower pot.

A Thavnairian Onion must be tended every day and takes 10 days to grow.

You can only get 1 Thavnairian Onion per seed, even if you use the best soil you can get.
