Rediscovering the game

Public

So, I got bored and decided to make an Alt character. I was going to use a story skip potion, but I decided I wanted to see the Limsa Lominsa story and took my character through it. It was interesting reseeing the beginning after going through all the later craziness, and you know what? It is a damn shame so much of the early stuff is unused.

Going through it all as a beginner, you get to ACTUALLY see the lands, see all the effort put into the surrounding countrysides landmarks, villages, farms, outposts, and out of the way nooks. You get to meet the little people, the workers, farmers, guards, and others. You get to see the stories of beginner adventurers like yourself and their efforts at trying to become famous.

If you actually stop and smell the roses and NOT try and speed through it all, there is actually a lot there and it is such a shame it is SO wasted in favor of the main save the world plot as soon as you leave the area to go to Minfilia and her primal quests.

One of the sad things is that the game really never resolves the plot with the Serpent Reavers. Their plan is stopped, but they are not. The idea of them is great, kind of a corrupted humans serving the Deep Ones kind of thing, lurking in the shadows, kidnapping people, and doing the Sahagin's bidding. It's so much cooler than the silly elemental nature stuff of Gridania. But, as far as I know, the game does NOTHING else with it once you become the Limsa envoy and leave the city.

Yes, I KNOW people want to level as fast as possible, but why? Why is having lots of buttons and powers so great? Why is power creep so much better than having slower level progression, slowly going though the world, having adventures and learning about it?

I remember when I first played WOW. Those early levels in the human forest were WONDERFUL. The place was so beautiful and vibrant, slowly discovering it piece by piece. The town, the bandits, the mine, the farms, dealing with Hogger, and everything else there. It was just so....magical and relaxing.

It's funny, I kind of felt a little of that too with FF14, taking a newbie character through the early quests, actually doing the side stuff with their little stories. Walking through the lands, I actually saw stuff I had never seen before, visited places I did not know that were there. I was kind of sad that my levels went up so fast and that the game just sped you through that low stuff. I bet it was different back then and you spent more time there.

It is also sad that they did not do more with the aspect of fellow adventurers. Their stories were interesting as well as hearing about their failures. It kind of felt like one of those Anime's like Goblin slayer and the various levels of adventurers going out on quests. But sadly, all that dries up after the Envoy stuff, and you become too important to hang out with the little guys as you go on to world saving stuff.

Of course, I know most people don't want the little stuff. They don't want to see 'slice of life' stories, go on little quests for common folk. They want grand adventures with grand fights, and be super powerful.

But sometimes, just sometimes, I wish they made it worth your while to just take your time and walk through the world, finding interesting things to see and do, and to actually experience the world of Eorzea instead of treating it like a speed bump on your way to the next new and cool thing.

This is honestly the biggest reason i'm against jump potions. I just wish they would let us skip ahead so we could go back later yus yus.

They did actually take care of the serpent reavers…. in a bit of a strange way though lol

their is a lot of interesting things to learn if you actually read the quests. but, not a lot of time to do it every day xD

I started this game on the 14 days trial back then. I just walked around on foot from places to places just to see the world, not doing quest.

Then, after I sub, I was hoping to play with other people. Most people in my FC were at lv 60, I just levelled as fast as I can.

I have a strange feeling that if Eorzea is real and we actually live our character, most of us won't be out there risking our life to save the world. Most of us will just make friends with NPC and help with small stuff.

It's been a long time since I took a casual stroll through the countryside. The stories that the FATEs tell, and the dialogue of the NPCs during it is great. I spend a lot of my time powering through to become better and stronger now though that I rarely stop to see the work put into this world.

I'm due to just dress up as an NPC and take a walk around Eorzea. At least since I'm at my capped level, I can first person through the countryside and look at the monsters and beasts.

It’ll be interesting to see if people revisit this stuff once the “new game plus” mechanic is implemented...

Esper, where did they do the serpent reaver thing? If I saw it, I probably did not understand it back then since I did not do the beginning quests.

@anna, a bit in the end of that part of the story, then in hm version which has the same Captain, only now he’s worshiping the cult of cutulu or something and was turned into a squid man. Most of the undead are his old mates.... so they’ve been mostly exterminated by their own doing.

Do you mean Sastasha? Doing it as an alt, it not seem to me that the pirate base was related to the Serpent Reavers since they get attacked by a Sahagin at the end who kills the captain.

Maybe I am wrong, I will have to read the description for Sastasha hard to see why we go there.

Speaking of the Sahagin, it saddens me that they hardly get used at all in the game as baddies, because visually they are great looking. After the Leviathan quest, they kind of just go away.

yeah i'm not sure why they are mostly ignored, though the same can be said for most other beast tribes as we move away from such contents. Maybe some new life will come in for them eventually

The nice part of Shadowbringers is your fame doesn't proceed you, so perhaps you meet some adventurer's who're just venturing out into their world and see them through their story. That's one of the reasons I really liked heavensward, the 2.5 quests tore down all you've worked for and left you at step one once more.

sahagin beast tribe has some neat story and details

Lulue, yeah, I liked that about Heavensward, you were all alone and had to build yourself back up again, no 'super Scion' support, which along with all of Othard's backup characters I thought REALLY brought Stormblood down.

I am the WOL, I don't NEED you people!

Mahdi, I saw the first part of the Sahagin BT, the story DOES look interesting, I should probably do it.

I spent some time last night enjoying the overworld and doing FATEs.

It was nice. I kind of forgot about the little stories that are put into each FATE. La Noscea has some of the best FATE stories. Or maybe it doesn't, I spend more time there than Thanalan and Shroud.

Your stories of WOW bring to mind my adventures of valkyria chronicles. The begining, oh so innocent and with much despair. I found myself invested in the rebellion. Yet, as the story brought me to the cities I found myself longing for more scenes in the countryside. How odd that I could be so easily sated by the simplicity of a cause in the countryside and alas yearning for the story to return me back to which I started.
