For info, as it can be confusing:
When you vanquish the enemy soldier and use the potion on him, his name bar stays red. It doesn't mean you failed. It's just the color that remains as is. You can ignore him and talk to the wounded soldier. In the meantime, the - still red - soldier will simply disappear.
